Severe Thunderstorm Warning for Los Alamos, Rio Arriba, and Sandoval Counties Through 7:45 PM MDT

Los Alamos, NM —
What is happening:
The National Weather Service in Albuquerque has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Warning for parts of north central New Mexico — northwestern Los Alamos County, south central Rio Arriba County, and northeastern Sandoval County. The warning is in effect through 7:45 PM MDT. At 6:58 PM MDT, a severe thunderstorm was located 7 miles east of Fenton Lake State Park — about 18 miles west of Los Alamos — moving northeast at 25 miles per hour. The storm was detected on radar.
Local impacts:
This storm is producing 60-mile-per-hour wind gusts and hail up to half-dollar size. Hail that large can damage vehicles. Damaging winds can tear at roofs and siding and knock down trees and tree limbs. Los Alamos, Abiquiu, and Santa Clara Pueblo are in the storm's path.
What to do:
- Get inside a well-built structure now and stay there until the storm passes.
- Stay away from windows — hail and wind-driven debris can shatter glass.
- If you are driving, pull over somewhere safe and wait for the storm to move through.
- After the storm, watch for downed tree limbs and power lines.
