What is happening:

A severe thunderstorm is bearing down on central Las Animas County right now. The National Weather Service in Pueblo says the storm was near Aguilar — about 18 miles north of Trinidad — just after 2:20 PM Mountain time, drifting east at about 10 miles per hour. The warning runs through 2:45 PM, and a tornado watch is also in effect for the area, meaning tornadoes could spin up quickly.

Local impacts:

This storm is packing 60-mile-per-hour wind gusts and quarter-size hail — roughly one inch across, big enough to dent cars. Radar shows the worst of it over rural parts of the county, but the weather service expects damage to roofs, siding, and trees where the core passes.

What to do:

- Get inside a sturdy building and move to an interior room on the lowest floor.

- Stay away from windows — hail this size can break glass.

- Keep your car under cover if you can; don't stay in a vehicle in the storm's path.

- Watch the sky: if you spot a funnel or tornado, take shelter in a basement or small interior room right away.
