Severe Thunderstorm Warning for Greenlee County Through 6:30 PM MST
**Greenlee County, Arizona —** The National Weather Service in Tucson has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Warning for central Greenlee County in southeastern Arizona until 6:30 PM MST tonight.UPDATE — Tuesday, October 20, 8:08 PM CT: The severe storm has moved to 7 miles northeast of Clifton, heading northeast at 20 mph. The main threat area is now rural east-central Greenlee County, including Route 78 near mile marker 164 and between mile markers 171 and 174. The warning continues through 8:30 PM CT.
**What is happening:** A severe thunderstorm was located over Clifton at 5:49 PM MST, moving northeast at 20 miles per hour. The storm is expected to reach Morenci and nearby stretches of the highway corridors — Route 78 between mile markers 172 and 174, and Route 191 between mile markers 156 and 172 — as it tracks through the county.
**Local impacts:** The storm is capable of producing 60 mile-per-hour wind gusts and quarter-size hail, about an inch across. Hail of that size can damage vehicles, and the winds can tear at roofs and siding and knock down trees. Radar is tracking the storm — these are radar-indicated threats.
**What to do:**
- Get inside a well-built structure now and stay away from windows
- Do not wait to hear thunder before taking cover — damaging winds can arrive before the rain or lightning
- If you are driving on Route 78 or Route 191 through the Clifton–Morenci corridor, pull off and wait out the storm
