Morenci, AZ — A severe thunderstorm warning is in effect for Graham and Greenlee counties in southeastern Arizona through 6:00 PM Mountain time. What is happening: At 5:32 PM Mountain time, the National Weather Service in Tucson tracked a severe storm about 9 miles southwest of Morenci, moving northeast at 35 miles per hour. It is heading toward Clifton, Morenci, San Jose, Duncan, York, Guthrie, Three Way, and the Safford Regional Airport area. Local impacts: Sixty-mile-per-hour gusts and half-dollar-size hail — large enough to smash windshields and batter crops. The storm path also crosses Route 78 between mile markers 155 and 164 and Route 191. What to do: Take shelter inside a well-built structure and stay clear of windows. Drivers on Routes 78 and 191 should pull off the road and wait it out — hail this size can be dangerous through a windshield.
