Severe Thunderstorm Warning for Edgecombe, Franklin, Halifax, Nash, and Warren Counties Through 3:30 PM

UPDATE — Sunday, October 11, 1:57 PM CT: NWS Raleigh reports a severe thunderstorm 13 miles south of Littleton — about 15 miles west of Halifax — moving northeast at 35 mph with 60 mph wind gusts and penny-size hail; a tornado is possible with this storm. The Severe Thunderstorm Warning for Halifax and Warren counties runs through 3:30 PM ET. Roanoke Rapids, Halifax, Littleton, Weldon, Glenview, Arcola, South Weldon, Airlie and Rosemary are in the path, along with I-95 between mile markers 160 and 173 and Medoc Mountain State Park.
UPDATE — Sunday, October 11, 1:34 PM CT: NWS Raleigh reports a severe thunderstorm 7 miles northwest of Dortches — about 9 miles north of Nashville — moving northeast at 30 mph with 60 mph wind gusts. The warning runs through 3:30 PM ET. Roanoke Rapids, Halifax, Littleton, Red Oak, Enfield, Weldon, Whitakers, Castalia, Glenview and Medoc Mountain State Park are in the path, along with I-95 between mile markers 145 and 173.
Nash County, North Carolina — A severe thunderstorm warning is in effect for southeastern Warren, Nash, northwestern Edgecombe, Halifax, and eastern Franklin counties until 3:30 PM EDT Sunday.
What is happening: The National Weather Service in Raleigh issued the warning at 2:11 PM EDT. At 2:10 PM, radar showed a severe thunderstorm about 8 miles west of Nashville, moving northeast at 30 mph. A Tornado Watch remains in effect for central North Carolina until 5:00 PM EDT, so these storms are part of a larger tornado-capable setup.
Local impacts: Wind gusts to 60 mph are expected, strong enough to damage roofs and siding and bring down trees and power lines.
What to do:
- Get inside a sturdy building now and stay away from windows.
- Tornadoes can develop quickly from severe thunderstorms, so remain alert for a possible tornado.
- If you spot a tornado, go at once into a basement or a small interior room on the lowest floor of a sturdy structure.
- Move to an interior room on the lowest floor of the building for your protection.
