Crane and Ward Counties, TX — A severe thunderstorm warning is in effect for southeastern Ward County and northern Crane County in west Texas through 4:00 p.m. Wednesday.

What is happening: The National Weather Service in Midland issued the warning at 3:26 p.m. after radar tracked a severe thunderstorm 7 miles northeast of Grandfalls, about 13 miles southeast of Monahans. The storm was moving northeast at 15 mph. Radar-indicated 70 mph wind gusts and ping-pong-ball-size hail made this storm dangerous as it crossed the area.

Local impacts: People and animals caught outdoors could be injured. The weather service warned to expect hail damage to roofs, siding, windows, and vehicles, plus considerable tree damage. Wind damage is also likely to mobile homes, roofs, and outbuildings. Grandfalls is among the locations in the storm's path.

What to do:

- Move to an interior room on the lowest floor of a building.

- Stay away from windows — hail and wind can shatter glass.

- If you are outdoors, get inside a sturdy building now.

- Keep pets inside and secure outdoor items if it is safe to do so.
