Flagstaff, Ariz. — A severe thunderstorm is moving north across north central Arizona, and the National Weather Service in Flagstaff has a Severe Thunderstorm Warning in effect for Coconino County until 2:30 PM Central time today.

What is happening: At 12:05 PM Mountain time, radar picked up a severe storm about five miles east of Kaibab Estates West, roughly 26 miles east of Seligman. It is moving north at 45 miles an hour. The storm is capable of quarter-size hail — large enough to damage vehicles. Communities in the path include Red Lake and Howard Mesa, and the warning also covers Interstate 40 between mile markers 151 and 154 and State Route 64 between mile markers 198 and 203.

Local impacts: Hail up to one inch in diameter is the main threat, and damage to cars and windows is expected. A Tornado Watch is also in effect for part of north central Arizona until 8 PM Mountain time this evening, so conditions remain favorable for more severe storms today.

What to do:

- Get inside a well-built structure right away and stay away from windows.

- If you are driving on I-40 or State Route 64 through the warned area, pull off the road and take cover until the storm passes.

- Keep an eye on the sky and local alerts — a Tornado Watch is in effect until 8 PM Mountain time.
