Severe Thunderstorm Warning for Coconino County Through 12:15 AM

Coconino County, Arizona — A fast-moving severe thunderstorm rolled toward the Flagstaff area late Wednesday night, throwing down quarter-size hail as it tracked north at 45 miles per hour.

What is happening:

The National Weather Service in Flagstaff issued a Severe Thunderstorm Warning for Coconino County in north central Arizona, in effect until 12:15 AM MST. At 11:38 PM MST, radar picked up the storm over Doney Park, about 12 miles northeast of Flagstaff, pushing north at 45 mph.

Local impacts:

Quarter-size hail is the main danger, and damage to vehicles is expected. The storm is also dumping torrential rain, which can flood low-lying roads and washes fast. Places in the path include Doney Park, Timberline, Fernwood, Pioneer Valley, Wupatki Trails, Pine Mountain Estates, Hutchison Acres, Macann Estates, the Wupatki National Monument and Sunset Crater Volcano National Monument areas, the Sunset Crater Visitors Center, Strawberry Crater Wilderness, and Doney Mountain. U.S. Highway 89 between mile markers 423 and 443 runs through the warned zone, as do Bonito Campground and O'Leary Group Campground.

What to do:

- Get inside a sturdy building now and stay away from windows — this storm can produce large hail.

- Do not drive through flooded roadways. Turn around if water covers the road.

- If you are camping, move to a solid shelter; do not ride this out in a tent.
