# Severe Thunderstorm Warning for Chaves and Lincoln Counties Through 5:15 PM

Southeastern New Mexico — A severe thunderstorm warning is in effect for parts of southeastern Lincoln County and central Chaves County through 5:15 PM Mountain Time.

What is happening:

The National Weather Service in Albuquerque picked up a severe thunderstorm on radar at 4:35 PM, about 16 miles east of Tinnie and roughly 24 miles west of Roswell. The storm is pushing east at 20 miles per hour and will mainly hit rural stretches of southeastern Lincoln and central Chaves Counties. Forecasters say torrential rain is falling with this storm as well, which raises the risk of flash flooding.

Local impacts:

This storm is packing 60-mile-per-hour wind gusts and half-dollar-size hail, about an inch and a quarter across. Hail that size is expected to damage vehicles, and the winds can tear at roofs, siding, and trees. The heavy rain could also flood low spots and roadways quickly.

What to do:

- Get inside a sturdy building right away and stay away from windows.

- Move vehicles under cover if you can — large hail is likely.

- If you are driving, pull off and wait it out; never try to cross a flooded road.
