UPDATE — Wednesday, October 21, 1:05 PM CT: The National Weather Service refreshed this warning — it now runs through 1:30 PM Mountain time. The storm track and hazards are unchanged.
Apache County, AZ — The National Weather Service in Flagstaff has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Warning for Apache County in northeastern Arizona through 1:30 p.m. Mountain Time this afternoon.
What is happening: Radar tracked a severe thunderstorm about eight miles south of Witch Well, around 45 miles north of Springerville, drifting northeast at 30 miles per hour. The warning runs until 1:30 p.m. MST and includes Witch Well, along with Highway 191/161 between mile markers 326 and 348 and State Route 61.
Local impacts: The storm is dropping half-dollar-size hail, radar indicates, and the Weather Service expects damage to vehicles in its path. Strong winds can come with these cells as well.
What to do:
Seek shelter inside a sturdy building and stay away from windows.
- If you are driving on Highway 191, 161, or State Route 61, pull well off the road and wait it out — hail this size dents cars and cracks windshields.
- Stay alert for further warnings as storms move across the county.
