M6.2 Earthquake Strikes Near Port-Olry, Vanuatu

Port-Olry, Vanuatu — A magnitude 6.2 earthquake shook the ocean east-southeast of Port-Olry, Vanuatu, on Thursday afternoon, October 29, at 4:46 PM Central Time.
What happened:
The quake struck about 43 kilometers east-southeast of Port-Olry at a depth of roughly 143 kilometers, making it a deep quake. The U.S. Geological Survey lists no tsunami threat from this event and rates its alert level green.
Impacts:
One felt report has been recorded so far. Because the quake was deep, shaking at the surface is often less severe than a shallow quake of the same size, but people near the epicenter may still have felt a jolt. No damage reports have been published yet.
What to do:
- Drop, cover, and hold on during shaking, and stay put until it stops.
- Check your home for hazards such as gas leaks, broken glass, and fallen objects.
- Stay alert for aftershocks, which can follow a larger quake.
- If you are near the coast and feel strong shaking, move to higher ground as a precaution.
