Breaking news alert for a Japanese earthquake with seismic data and source attribution.

Hasaki, Japan — A magnitude 6.1 earthquake struck in the Pacific Ocean off the east coast of Japan early Friday morning, the U.S. Geological Survey reports.

What happened:

The quake hit at 4:39 AM Central Time on Friday, November 6, centered about 156 kilometers southeast of Hasaki, Japan, in the waters off Honshu island. That is roughly 97 miles offshore. It struck at a depth of about 10 kilometers, or 6 miles, which counts as a shallow quake. Local time in Japan was 7:39 PM Friday evening.

Impacts:

Shaking near the coast was light, and only a small number of people have reported feeling it so far. The Geological Survey's damage assessment is green, meaning little to no damage is expected. There is no tsunami threat from this earthquake.

What to do:

- If you feel shaking, drop to the ground, take cover under a sturdy table, and hold on until the shaking stops.

- Stay away from windows, heavy furniture, and anything that could fall.

- Expect aftershocks. Smaller quakes can follow for hours or days after a quake this size.

- Before going back inside a damaged building, check for hazards like gas leaks, broken glass, and fallen power lines.
