Shima, Japan — A magnitude 6.0 earthquake struck deep beneath the Pacific coast near Shima, Japan, on Saturday evening, shaking ground across the region but causing no tsunami threat.

What happened:

The earthquake hit at 5:15 PM Central Time on Saturday, October 31, 2026 (7:15 AM Sunday local time in Japan). The U.S. Geological Survey placed the quake about 58 kilometers (36 miles) south-southeast of Shima, at a depth of about 352 kilometers (219 miles) below the surface. A quake that deep spreads its energy over a wide area, so shaking at the surface is usually lighter than a shallow quake of the same size.

Impacts:

Early shaking estimates put the intensity at light, around level III on the shaking scale, with no felt reports filed yet in the initial USGS report. No tsunami warning was issued for this earthquake, and no damage reports had been confirmed at the time of this report.

What to do:

- If you feel shaking, drop to the ground, take cover under a sturdy table, and hold on until the shaking stops.

- Stay away from windows, heavy furniture, and anything that could fall.
