M5.7 Earthquake Strikes Vanuatu
Port-Olry, Vanuatu — A magnitude 5.7 earthquake struck the waters off northern Vanuatu late Friday night, the U.S. Geological Survey reports.
What happened: The quake hit at 11:05 p.m. CDT Friday (Oct 23), centered about 205 kilometers northwest of Port-Olry, at a depth of 10 kilometers. A 10-kilometer depth is considered shallow, which is the kind of quake people on land are more likely to feel.
Impacts: There are no damage reports at this time, and the USGS has not issued a tsunami warning for this quake. As of this writing, no felt reports have come into the USGS from the islands.
What to do:
- Drop, cover, and hold on if shaking reaches you.
- Stay away from windows and anything that could fall.
- After shaking stops, check for gas leaks, broken glass, and cracks in walls.
- Be ready for aftershocks — they can follow a quake like this for hours or days.
