M5.2 Earthquake Strikes Off the Chiapas Coast, Mexico

Puerto Madero, Mexico — A magnitude 5.2 earthquake struck off Mexico's southern Pacific coast Saturday morning at 8:59 AM Central Time, centered about 53 miles southwest of Brisas Barra de Suchiate in Chiapas state.

What happened: The U.S. Geological Survey places the quake offshore at a depth of about 6 miles. The epicenter lies in the Pacific off the Chiapas shoreline, in a zone where the Cocos Plate dives beneath North America — one of the most seismically active stretches of coastline in the world.

Impacts: No "felt it" reports have been filed with the USGS yet, and with the epicenter offshore, any shaking on land was likely light and brief. No tsunami warning was issued for this event, and there are no early reports of damage.

What to do:

- If you felt shaking, drop, cover, and hold on until it passes.

- Check shelves and cabinets for items that may have shifted.

- Aftershocks are possible after a 5.2 — stay alert through the day.
