M5.2 Earthquake Strikes Northeastern Afghanistan

Ashkasham, Afghanistan — A magnitude 5.2 earthquake struck the mountains of northeastern Afghanistan on Sunday, shaking ground near the town of Ashkasham close to the Tajikistan border.
What happened: The quake hit at 12:44 PM Central Time on Sunday, October 25, centered about 59 kilometers southwest of Ashkasham. It struck at a depth of about 110 kilometers, or roughly 68 miles, below the surface. The U.S. Geological Survey reviewed and confirmed the event.
Impacts: No tsunami threat applies to this inland quake, and no damage reports had been posted at the time of this report. Quakes this deep are often felt less sharply at the surface than shallow ones, though people near the epicenter may have felt light to moderate shaking.
What to do:
- Drop, cover, and hold on during shaking, and stay clear of windows and heavy objects that could fall.
- After the shaking stops, check yourself and those around you for injuries and check for hazards like gas leaks, broken glass, and damaged wiring.
- Stay alert for aftershocks, which can follow a quake like this one, and be ready to drop, cover, and hold on again.
