M5.2 Earthquake Strikes Italy's Aeolian Islands

Malfa, Italy — A magnitude 5.2 earthquake shook the Tyrrhenian Sea off Italy's Aeolian Islands on Friday morning, the U.S. Geological Survey reported.
**What happened:** The quake struck at 8:55 a.m. Central time (2:55 p.m. local time), centered about 50 kilometers west-northwest of Malfa on the island of Salina. It hit at a shallow depth of 10 kilometers, which can make shaking feel stronger near the epicenter.
**Impacts:** Shaking from a quake this size would be felt across the Aeolian archipelago and could be felt in northern Sicily. No damage reports or tsunami information were available at the time of this report.
**What to do:**
- Drop to the ground, take cover under sturdy furniture, and hold on until the shaking stops.
- After the shaking, check your home for hazards — gas leaks, damaged wiring, broken glass.
- Expect aftershocks. If you are near the coast and officials issue an alert, move to higher ground.
