M5.1 Earthquake Strikes Western China

**Yanglong, Sichuan Province, China —** A magnitude 5.1 earthquake shook a remote stretch of western China early Tuesday morning, striking at about 1:41 a.m. Central Time.
**What happened:** The quake hit 263 kilometers west-southwest of Yanglong, in the rugged mountain country of western Sichuan, at a shallow depth of about 10 kilometers. The U.S. Geological Survey says the event was recorded by 57 seismic stations and has been reviewed by agency seismologists.
**Impacts:** This is a remote, sparsely populated region — no shaking reports have come in so far, and no tsunami was generated. The USGS issued no damage alert for this event. There are no reports of injuries or damage at this time.
**What to do:**
- If you feel shaking, drop, cover, and hold on until it stops.
- Stay clear of damaged buildings, steep slopes, and anything that could fall.
- Expect aftershocks — they can be strong enough to do damage on their own.
- Check gas, water, and electrical lines for damage before using them.
