M5.1 Earthquake Strikes Near Tomohon, Indonesia
Tomohon, Indonesia — A magnitude 5.1 earthquake struck about 19 kilometers west-northwest of Tomohon, Indonesia, early Monday morning Central Time.
What happened: The earthquake hit at 2:13 AM Central Time on Monday, November 2, 2026. The U.S. Geological Survey placed the quake deep below the surface, at a depth of about 197 kilometers, or roughly 122 miles. No tsunami warning was issued for this quake, and no felt reports were listed in the early Geological Survey data.
Impacts: The quake was centered near Tomohon on the island of Sulawesi. Because it struck so deep underground, shaking at the surface is usually less intense than a shallow quake of the same size. No damage reports were listed in the early data.
What to do: Drop, cover, and hold on during shaking. Stay away from windows and objects that could fall. Check for hazards such as damaged power lines or gas leaks after the shaking stops. Be ready for aftershocks, which can follow a quake like this.
