M5.1 Earthquake Strikes Near Finschhafen, Papua New Guinea

Breaking news alert for an earthquake in Papua New Guinea

Finschhafen, Papua New Guinea — A magnitude 5.1 earthquake struck about 97 kilometers north-northeast of Finschhafen, Papua New Guinea, on Thursday evening, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

What happened: The quake hit at 10:04 PM Central Time on Thursday, October 29, 2026, at a depth of about 116 kilometers, well below the surface. The U.S. Geological Survey has reviewed the event. The USGS lists no tsunami threat for this event, and no felt reports had been filed with the USGS at the time of this report.

Impacts: Because the quake was deep underground, shaking at the surface is often less intense than a shallow quake of the same size, but people near the epicenter may still have felt it. No damage or injury reports were available from the USGS at publication time.

What to do:

- Drop, cover, and hold on during shaking, and stay indoors until it stops.

- Check yourself and those around you for injuries, and check your home for hazards like broken glass, gas leaks, and cracked walls.

- Be ready for aftershocks. Smaller quakes can follow for hours or days.

- If you are near the coast and feel strong shaking, move to higher ground right away.
