A news alert graphic for an earthquake in Vanuatu.

Port-Olry, Vanuatu — A magnitude 5.0 earthquake struck in the ocean off northern Vanuatu on Saturday afternoon, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

What happened: The quake hit at 2:07 p.m. Central Time on Saturday, October 24, 2026, centered about 193 kilometers (roughly 120 miles) northwest of Port-Olry, at a depth of about 10 kilometers (about 6 miles). The USGS has reviewed the event. No tsunami threat was issued for this quake, and no felt reports have been published so far.

Impacts: No damage reports have been published for this earthquake. Because the epicenter sits offshore, shaking on land would have been strongest on the northern islands nearest the epicenter, but the USGS has not posted a shaking-intensity summary for this event.

What to do:

- If you feel shaking, drop to the ground, take cover under a sturdy table, and hold on until the shaking stops.

- Stay away from windows, heavy furniture, and anything that could fall.

- Check your home for hazards such as gas leaks, broken glass, and cracked walls before settling back in.

- Expect aftershocks and be ready to drop, cover, and hold on again.
