Panama City, Panama — A magnitude 5.0 earthquake struck offshore waters south of Panama on Tuesday evening, the U.S. Geological Survey reports.

What happened: The quake hit at 8:20 PM Central time (1:20 AM Wednesday UTC) in the Pacific off Panama's southern coast. The USGS did not issue a tsunami warning, and no tsunami threat flag is attached to this event.

Impacts: No damage or injury reports have come in yet, and the USGS has logged no felt reports for this quake. Shaking from an offshore event of this size typically fades before reaching inland communities.

What to do:

- If you felt shaking, check your home for gas, water, and electrical damage before turning things back on.

- Stay alert for aftershocks — smaller tremors are common in the hours after a quake this size.

- If you are near the coast and a tsunami warning is ever issued, move to high ground immediately — do not wait to see the water.
