M5.0 Earthquake Strikes Northwest of Port-Olry, Vanuatu

Port-Olry, Vanuatu — A magnitude 5.0 earthquake shook the ocean floor northwest of Port-Olry, Vanuatu, early Saturday morning, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. What happened: The quake struck at 6:31 AM CT on Saturday, October 31, centered about 196 kilometers (roughly 122 miles) northwest of Port-Olry at a depth of about 10 kilometers (around 6 miles). That shallow depth means shaking can feel stronger near the epicenter, even well offshore. Impacts: No tsunami warning was issued for this quake, and the Geological Survey has not posted felt reports or damage reports so far. The epicenter sits in open ocean north of Vanuatu's islands, away from major towns. What to do: If you felt shaking, drop, cover, and hold on until it stops, then check for hazards like broken glass or damaged walls. Stay alert for aftershocks, which can follow a quake like this in the hours ahead. If you are near the coast and feel strong or long shaking, move to higher ground right away and follow local official guidance. Source: U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), October 31, 2026.
