M5.0 Earthquake Strikes Northern India

Thang, Ladakh, India — A magnitude 5.0 earthquake struck remote northern India late Thursday morning, the U.S. Geological Survey reports.
What happened: The quake hit at 10:56 AM Central Time, centered about 130 kilometers northeast of Thang, in the Ladakh region near India's northern border. It struck at a depth of about 77 kilometers below the surface, which is considered a deep earthquake.
Impacts: No damage reports have come in so far, and the Geological Survey has received no reports of shaking felt by residents. Because the quake was deep and struck a remote area, strong shaking at the surface is less likely. No tsunami threat was issued.
What to do:
If you feel shaking, drop to the ground, take cover under a sturdy table, and hold on until it stops.
- Stay away from windows, heavy furniture, and anything that could fall.
- After the shaking stops, check for hazards such as gas leaks, broken glass, and damaged walls before moving around.
- Be ready for aftershocks, which can follow a quake of this size.
