M5.0 Earthquake Strikes Central Tibet

# M5.0 Earthquake Strikes Central Tibet
Nagqu, Tibet — A magnitude 5.0 earthquake struck remote central Tibet late this afternoon, the U.S. Geological Survey reports.
What happened: The quake hit at 1:06 PM CT, centered about 207 kilometers east-northeast of Nagqu. It struck at a shallow depth of 10 kilometers, which can make shaking feel stronger near the epicenter. The USGS reports no tsunami threat from this earthquake.
Impacts: The epicenter sits in a sparsely populated high-plateau region, and the USGS has no felt reports or damage reports on record yet. No injuries have been reported. Earthquake officials typically update those numbers as reports come in.
What to do:
- If you felt shaking, drop to the ground, take cover under sturdy furniture, and hold on until the shaking stops.
- Stay clear of damaged buildings, broken windows, and anything that could fall.
- Expect aftershocks — even smaller ones can knock loose objects that were weakened by the first quake.
