M5.0 Earthquake Strikes 80 km SSE of Sand Point, Alaska

Sand Point, Alaska —
**What happened:** A magnitude 5.0 earthquake struck about 50 miles southeast of Sand Point, Alaska, at 5:40 a.m. Central Time this morning. The quake hit 51 kilometers — about 32 miles — below the surface, out in the Alaska Peninsula waters.
**Impacts:** No damage or injury reports are out yet, and shaking does not appear to have been widely felt on land. The USGS has flagged the event with its tsunami review code, which is standard for offshore quakes of this size while analysts review the data — no tsunami warning has been issued.
**What to do:**
- Drop, cover, and hold on if you feel shaking during an aftershock.
- Check your home for cracks, broken gas lines, or fallen objects before settling back in.
- If you are near the coast and get an official tsunami alert, move to higher ground immediately.
- Expect possible aftershocks over the next day — they can be strong enough to feel.
