M4.9 Earthquake Strikes Tajikistan

Murghob, Tajikistan — A magnitude 4.9 earthquake shook the high mountains of eastern Tajikistan on Monday morning, the U.S. Geological Survey reports.
What happened: The quake struck at 10:35 AM Central time, centered about 77 kilometers west-southwest of Murghob in the Gorno-Badakhshan region, at a shallow depth of 10 kilometers. Shallow quakes are the kind people feel most strongly near the epicenter.
Impacts: No damage has been reported so far, and this inland quake carries no tsunami threat. No immediate reports of injuries have surfaced.
What to do:
- If you feel shaking: drop to the ground, take cover under a sturdy table, and hold on until it stops.
- Stay clear of windows, glass, and anything that could fall.
- After the shaking stops, check gas lines and wiring before using anything electrical or striking a match.
- Expect aftershocks — smaller tremors often follow the first quake.
