M4.9 Earthquake Strikes Sumatra, Indonesia
Curup, Indonesia — A magnitude 4.9 earthquake struck the island of Sumatra in western Indonesia early this morning, about 53 miles north-northwest of Curup in Bengkulu province.
What happened:
The quake hit at 5:57 AM CT (10:57 AM local time) at a depth of roughly 84 miles — deep enough that shaking at the surface was likely moderate. The epicenter sits inland on the west side of Sumatra, south of the equator.
Impacts:
No tsunami warning was issued — deep inland earthquakes like this one do not generate tsunamis. No immediate reports of damage or injuries were available. The U.S. Geological Survey had not received felt reports as of this writing.
What to do:
- Drop, cover, and hold on if you feel shaking.
- After a quake, check your home for gas leaks, cracked walls, or fallen objects before settling back in.
- Expect possible aftershocks and stay alert for official updates.
