San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua — A magnitude 4.9 earthquake struck offshore of Nicaragua's Pacific coast early Monday morning, shaking coastal communities near San Juan del Sur.
What happened: The quake hit at about 12:18 AM Central Time, centered roughly 68 kilometers (42 miles) west-southwest of San Juan del Sur in the Pacific Ocean. It struck at a depth of about 44 kilometers (27 miles). The U.S. Geological Survey has not issued a tsunami warning for this event.
Impacts: A quake of this size at this depth is typically felt near the epicenter but is less likely to cause serious damage. No damage reports or felt reports have been logged yet, and there is no tsunami threat.
What to do:
- If you felt shaking, check your home for damage — gas lines, water pipes, and cracked walls.
- Expect possible aftershocks in the hours ahead. Have a safe spot away from heavy furniture.
- Stay off the phone except for emergencies so lines stay open for responders.
