M4.9 Earthquake Strikes Off Mexico's Southern Coast

Puerto Madero, Mexico — A magnitude 4.9 earthquake shook the waters off southern Mexico on Friday evening, striking at 8:03 PM Central Time about 71 miles southwest of Puerto Madero, Chiapas.

What happened: According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the quake hit at a depth of roughly 6 miles beneath the Pacific. The epicenter was well offshore, along the Middle America Trench where tectonic plates grind past each other off the Chiapas coast.

Impacts: With the epicenter far offshore, shaking in coastal towns was likely weak to light. The USGS has received no felt reports so far. No tsunami advisory was issued, and no damage has been reported.

What to do:

- Drop, cover, and hold on if you feel the ground move.

- Move away from windows and unsecured objects.

- Small aftershocks can follow — if another jolt hits, protect yourself the same way.
