M4.9 Earthquake Strikes Near Khorixas, Namibia

Khorixas, Namibia — A magnitude 4.9 earthquake struck northwestern Namibia on Saturday morning, November 7, 2026. The U.S. Geological Survey recorded the quake at 9:22 AM Central Time, about 77 kilometers — roughly 48 miles — north-northwest of Khorixas, in the Kunene Region.
What happened:
The earthquake hit at a shallow depth of about 8 kilometers, or 5 miles below the surface. The USGS has reviewed the data from more than 100 seismic stations and lists the quake as a magnitude 4.9. The epicenter sits in a remote stretch of northwestern Namibia, well away from the country's larger cities.
Impacts:
No damage has been reported so far, and the USGS has received no felt reports from the area. No tsunami threat was issued — the quake struck on land, far from the coast. A magnitude 4.9 quake at this depth can shake the ground strongly near the epicenter, but it is below the level that typically causes major structural damage.
What to do:
If you feel shaking, drop to the ground, take cover under a sturdy table or desk, and hold on until the shaking stops.
- Stay away from windows, heavy furniture, and anything that could fall.
- After the shaking ends, check yourself and those around you for injuries, then check your home for hazards like gas leaks or broken glass.
- Expect aftershocks. Smaller quakes can follow in the hours and days after a quake like this one, so stay alert.
