M4.9 Earthquake Strikes Near Gadung, Philippines

Gadung, Philippines — A magnitude 4.9 earthquake struck deep beneath the southern Philippines on Saturday afternoon, the U.S. Geological Survey reports.
What happened: The quake hit at 5:25 PM Central Time, about 41 kilometers west-southwest of Gadung. It was centered very deep underground, roughly 607 kilometers below the surface. The USGS lists the quake as reviewed, with a magnitude of 4.9.
Impacts: Because the quake was so deep, shaking at the surface was likely light or not felt at all. The USGS has received no felt reports so far, and there are no reports of damage. No tsunami was generated.
What to do: People in the area should stay alert for aftershocks, which can follow a quake like this. If you feel shaking, drop to the ground, take cover under a sturdy table, and hold on until it stops. After shaking ends, check your surroundings for fallen objects, cracked walls, or gas leaks before moving around, and stay clear of damaged buildings.
