M4.8 Earthquake Strikes South of the Fiji Islands

Suva, Fiji —
What happened: A magnitude 4.8 earthquake hit in the ocean south of the Fiji Islands at 11:29 AM Central time today. The quake struck deep underground — about 68 miles down — and was centered in open water well south of Fiji's main islands.
Impacts: Because the shaking started so deep, it likely went unfelt at the surface. No damage reports have come in, and no felt reports have been filed with the U.S. Geological Survey. The USGS shows no tsunami threat from this quake.
What to do:
- If you ever feel shaking, drop, cover, and hold on until it stops.
- Stay away from windows and anything that could fall.
- Aftershocks are possible after any quake — check for hazards around your home once shaking ends.
