M4.8 Earthquake Strikes Sea of Okhotsk

Breaking news alert about an earthquake in the Sea of Okhotsk.

Sea of Okhotsk, Russia — A magnitude 4.8 earthquake struck the Sea of Okhotsk early Thursday morning, shaking the waters off Russia's far east coast, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

What happened:

The quake hit at 4:09 AM Central Time on Thursday, November 5, 2026. Its center was in the Sea of Okhotsk, near Sakhalin Island in Russia's far east, at a depth of about 554 kilometers (344 miles) below the surface — very deep for an earthquake.

Impacts:

No shaking was reported on land, and no damage has been reported. The USGS issued no tsunami warning for this quake. Because the quake struck so deep beneath the sea floor, shaking at the surface would have been weak even close to the epicenter.

What to do:

- If you feel shaking, drop to the ground, take cover under a sturdy table, and hold on until the shaking stops.

- Stay away from windows and heavy objects that could fall.

- Check for hazards such as gas leaks or broken glass after shaking ends.

- Be ready for aftershocks, which can follow a quake in the hours and days after.
