M4.8 Earthquake Strikes Near Vanuatu

Norsup, Vanuatu — A magnitude 4.8 earthquake struck near the island nation of Vanuatu early Saturday, hitting at 3:59 AM Central Time about 68 miles northeast of Norsup at a depth of roughly 6 miles.

What happened: The U.S. Geological Survey reports the quake occurred in the waters of the Vanuatu archipelago, a volcanic island chain that sits on one of the most active earthquake belts on the planet. The shallow depth meant the energy reached the surface with little to blunt it.

Impacts: One felt report has come in so far, describing light shaking. Vanuatu's islands are accustomed to seismic activity, and a 4.8 at this distance typically rattles dishes and sways hanging objects without causing structural damage. No tsunami threat was issued, and no damage has been reported.

What to do:

- During shaking, drop, cover, and hold on under sturdy furniture.

- If you're near the coast and shaking feels strong or lasts a long time, move to higher ground as a precaution.

- Check your surroundings for fallen objects once the shaking stops.
