M4.8 Earthquake Strikes Near the Kuril Islands

Severo-Kuril'sk, Russia —
**What happened:** A magnitude 4.8 earthquake struck off the Kuril Islands chain late this afternoon, centered about 269 kilometers (167 miles) south-southwest of Severo-Kuril'sk at a depth of roughly 50 kilometers (31 miles). It hit at 4:09 PM Central time. The quake has been reviewed by seismologists, and the U.S. Geological Survey reports no tsunami threat from this event.
**Impacts:** The epicenter sits in open ocean well away from populated islands, so no damage is expected. Shaking was likely felt only weakly, if at all, on the nearest islands. No felt reports have been posted, and no tsunami warning was issued.
**What to do:**
- If you ever feel shaking: drop, cover, and hold on.
- Check gas, water, and electrical lines after a strong quake.
- Expect aftershocks — they can follow for hours or days after a quake this size.
