Its center was about 36 kilometers, or 22 miles, west-northwest of Poso, in Central Sulawesi province. The quake started about 10 kilometers, or 6 miles, below the surface, which counts as shallow. The U.S. Geological Survey has issued no tsunami threat for this quake, and it has received no felt reports so far.
IMPACTS:
Shaking would have been felt most strongly in and around Poso and the nearby coast of Central Sulawesi. WHAT TO DO:
If you feel the ground shake, drop to the floor, take cover under a sturdy table or desk, and hold on until the shaking stops.
Stay away from windows, glass, and anything that could fall.
Once the shaking stops, check for hazards around you, including gas leaks, broken glass, and cracked walls, before moving around.
Be ready for aftershocks. Smaller quakes can follow a quake like this one in the hours and days ahead.
