M4.8 Earthquake Strikes Near Port-Olry, Vanuatu — Sunday, Oct 25, 2026

Breaking news alert graphic for an earthquake in Vanuatu.

Port-Olry, Vanuatu — A magnitude 4.8 earthquake struck in the waters northwest of Port-Olry, Vanuatu, on Sunday afternoon.

What happened:

The quake hit at 3:30 PM Central Time on Sunday, October 25, centered about 167 kilometers west-northwest of Port-Olry. The U.S. Geological Survey puts the depth at 10 kilometers, which is shallow. A shallow quake like this one can be felt more strongly near the epicenter than a deeper quake of the same size.

Impacts:

No tsunami warning was issued for this quake, and the Geological Survey has no felt reports or damage reports tied to it so far. The epicenter sits offshore in the South Pacific, away from the island's towns, which limits what people on land would have felt.

What to do:

- If you feel shaking, drop to the ground, take cover under a sturdy table, and hold on until the shaking stops.

- Stay away from windows, heavy furniture, and anything that could fall.

- Check your home for hazards like gas leaks, broken glass, and cracked walls before settling back in.

- Expect aftershocks. Smaller quakes often follow a quake like this one, so stay alert and be ready to drop, cover, and hold on again.
