M4.8 Earthquake Strikes Deep Beneath the South Pacific

Alo, Wallis and Futuna — A magnitude 4.8 earthquake struck deep beneath the South Pacific late Friday night, hitting at 11:19 PM Central Time about 122 miles south-southeast of Alo at an exceptional depth of roughly 273 miles.

What happened: The U.S. Geological Survey reports this quake occurred far below the Earth's crust, in the subducting slab of the Pacific Plate. At 273 miles down, it ranks among the deeper earthquakes recorded — most quakes happen within the top 40 miles of the planet.

Impacts: Earthquakes this deep almost never cause damage, and the seismic energy spreads out and weakens long before reaching the surface. The USGS has logged no felt reports, and there was no tsunami threat from an event this deep.

What to do:

- Deep quakes like this one pose no action items for residents — but it's a good reminder to know your earthquake drill.

- Drop, cover, and hold on remains the guidance for any shaking you do feel.
