M4.8 Earthquake Strikes Central Mid-Atlantic Ridge

Mid-Atlantic Ridge — A magnitude 4.8 earthquake struck the central Mid-Atlantic Ridge on Sunday morning, November 8, 2026, at 10:33 AM CT.
What happened:
A magnitude 4.8 earthquake struck beneath the central Mid-Atlantic Ridge, the long undersea mountain range running down the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. The quake hit at a depth of about 10 kilometers, or roughly 6 miles, below the ocean floor. The U.S. Geological Survey recorded the earthquake at 10:33 AM Central Time.
Impacts:
The earthquake happened far from land in the open Atlantic, and no shaking was reported on shore. There are no reports of damage, and the USGS says there is no tsunami threat from this earthquake. The Mid-Atlantic Ridge is one of the most active earthquake zones in the world, where tectonic plates slowly pull apart, so earthquakes like this one are common there.
What to do:
If you ever feel shaking, drop to the ground, take cover under a sturdy table, and hold on until the shaking stops. Stay away from windows and anything that could fall. After an earthquake, check for hazards such as gas leaks or damaged wiring, and be ready for aftershocks.
