M4.7 Earthquake Strikes Near Saint Kitts in the Caribbean
Basseterre, Saint Kitts and Nevis —
What happened: A magnitude 4.7 earthquake struck about 12 miles southwest of Sandy Point Town, on the island of Saint Kitts, at 10:35 this morning Central Time (11:35 AM local time). The U.S. Geological Survey puts the quake's depth at roughly 93 miles below the surface — a deep quake, which is significant for how it was felt.
Impacts: Because the quake struck so deep underground, shaking at the surface appears to have been light. The USGS has received just one felt report so far, and there are no damage reports. No tsunami was generated, and none is expected.
What to do:
- If you feel shaking, drop, cover, and hold on under sturdy furniture until it stops.
- After shaking ends, check your home for hazards like cracked walls, broken gas lines, or fallen objects.
- Aftershocks are possible — stay alert and avoid damaged buildings.
