Nagqu, Tibet, China — A magnitude 4.7 earthquake struck the Nagqu region of Tibet on Friday morning, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

What happened: The quake hit at 9:14 AM Central Time, centered about 215 kilometers northeast of Nagqu at a shallow depth of 10 kilometers. Shallow quakes this size can produce noticeable shaking in towns near the epicenter. No tsunami threat was issued, and the USGS had not yet posted felt reports for the remote area.

Impacts: So far there are no reports of damage or injuries. The region around Nagqu sits on active seismic terrain, and small-to-moderate quakes are a regular occurrence there. Officials in Tibet monitor the area closely whenever shaking is felt.

What to do:

- If you are inside when shaking starts, drop to the ground, take cover under sturdy furniture, and hold on until the shaking stops.

- Stay away from windows, glass, and anything that could fall.

- After the shaking, check for gas leaks, broken glass, and damaged wiring before moving around.

- Expect aftershocks — smaller tremors can follow in the hours and days after a quake this size.
