M4.6 Earthquake Strikes Sumba, Indonesia
Tambolaka, Indonesia — A magnitude 4.6 earthquake shook the waters west of Sumba island early Saturday morning, the U.S. Geological Survey reports.
**What happened:** The quake struck about 70 kilometers west of Tambolaka at 7:46 AM Central time Saturday. USGS lists the depth at roughly 69 kilometers — a deeper quake, which typically softens the shaking felt at the surface. The event has been reviewed by USGS seismologists.
**Impacts:** No felt reports and no damage reports had been filed when TNW checked the latest USGS data. The quake's depth and offshore location kept the threat low. USGS issued no tsunami alert for this event.
**What to do:**
- If you feel shaking, drop to the ground, take cover under sturdy furniture, and hold on until it stops.
- Stay indoors and away from windows during the shaking; head outside only after it ends if the building looks damaged.
- Check for gas leaks, broken glass, and cracked walls before going back inside damaged rooms.
- Expect aftershocks — smaller follow-on quakes can strike in the hours after a quake like this one.
