M4.6 Earthquake Strikes South Sandwich Islands Region

Breaking news alert for a seismic event in the South Sandwich Islands region.

South Sandwich Islands — A magnitude 4.6 earthquake struck the South Sandwich Islands region early Saturday morning, shaking a remote stretch of the South Atlantic Ocean.

What happened:

The quake hit at 1:14 AM Central Time on Saturday, November 7. The U.S. Geological Survey places the epicenter in the South Sandwich Islands region, about 65 miles below the surface. The South Sandwich Islands are a remote volcanic island chain in the South Atlantic, far from any major city.

Impacts:

No shaking reports have come in from the public, and no tsunami was generated by this quake. The islands are uninhabited, so no damage is expected. Aftershocks are possible in the hours after a quake like this, though most are smaller than the main shock.

What to do:

- If you feel shaking, drop to the ground, take cover under a sturdy table, and hold on until it stops.

- Stay away from windows, heavy furniture, and anything that could fall.

- Check your home for hazards like gas leaks or broken glass before turning things back on.

- Expect aftershocks and be ready to drop, cover, and hold on again.
