M4.6 Earthquake Strikes South of the Fiji Islands — November 5

South of the Fiji Islands — A magnitude 4.6 earthquake struck in the waters south of the Fiji Islands on Thursday afternoon, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
What happened:
The quake hit at 4:34 PM Central Time on Thursday, November 5, 2026. Its center was located in the South Pacific south of the Fiji Islands, at a depth of about 523 kilometers, or roughly 325 miles, below the surface. That is far deeper than most earthquakes, which typically occur within the top 70 kilometers of the crust.
Impacts:
Because the quake was so deep and centered in open ocean, no shaking reports have come in and no damage has been reported. The U.S. Geological Survey reports no tsunami threat from this earthquake. Deep earthquakes like this one are usually felt little or not at all at the surface, even at moderate magnitudes.
What to do:
- If you ever feel shaking, drop to the ground, take cover under a sturdy table or desk, and hold on until the shaking stops.
- Stay away from windows, heavy furniture, and anything that could fall.
- After a quake, check for hazards such as gas leaks, broken glass, and damaged walls before moving around.
- Be ready for aftershocks, which can follow a larger quake in the hours and days after.
