M4.6 Earthquake Strikes South of the Fiji Islands

Suva, Fiji —

**What happened:** A magnitude 4.6 earthquake struck in the waters south of the Fiji Islands at 11:13 this morning Central Time, the U.S. Geological Survey reports. The quake was centered at a depth of about 536 kilometers — more than 330 miles below the surface — which is exceptionally deep.

**Impacts:** No damage reports have come in, and the USGS shows no tsunami threat from this quake. Because the rupture happened so deep in the Earth, its energy spread out before reaching the surface, so shaking at ground level would have been faint to unnoticed. No areas are under a tsunami watch or warning.

**What to do:**

- If you ever feel strong shaking: drop to the ground, take cover under sturdy furniture, and hold on.

- After a quake, check your surroundings for gas leaks, downed lines, and unstable items on shelves.

- Expect the possibility of smaller aftershocks in the hours ahead.
