M4.6 Earthquake Strikes Northern Chile

Ollagüe, Chile —
**What happened:** A magnitude 4.6 earthquake struck northern Chile at 4:37 PM Central time on Thursday, centered about 49 kilometers (30 miles) south of the village of Ollagüe, near the Bolivian border. The U.S. Geological Survey puts the depth at about 142 kilometers (88 miles) — deep enough that shaking at the surface would have been muted. No tsunami threat was issued.
**Impacts:** No felt reports have been logged yet, and the USGS issued no shaking alert — at this depth and magnitude, damage is not expected. The quake registered in a remote, sparsely populated stretch of the Atacama highlands.
**What to do:**
- Drop, cover, and hold on during shaking — get under a sturdy table and stay there.
- After the shaking stops, check for hazards: gas leaks, broken glass, cracked walls.
- Expect aftershocks and be ready to drop again.
