M4.6 Earthquake Strikes Northern Argentina

El Aguilar, Argentina — A magnitude 4.6 earthquake struck northern Argentina early Tuesday morning, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
What happened:
The quake hit at 6:41 AM Central Time on Tuesday, October 27, about 100 kilometers west of El Aguilar in Jujuy province, near Argentina's border region. It struck deep underground, at a depth of about 206 kilometers, which typically limits shaking felt at the surface. No tsunami threat was issued.
Impacts:
The Geological Survey had received no felt reports at the time of this report, and no damage reports were available. Deep earthquakes of this size rarely cause serious damage, though people near the epicenter may have felt light shaking.
What to do:
- Drop, cover, and hold on during shaking, and stay away from windows and heavy objects that could fall.
- After shaking stops, check your home for hazards such as gas leaks, broken glass, and cracked walls.
- Be ready for aftershocks, which can follow a larger quake, and stay clear of damaged buildings.
- If you are driving when a quake hits, pull over safely and stop until the shaking ends.
