Breaking news alert graphic for a seismic event in Guam

Yigo Village, Guam — A magnitude 4.6 earthquake struck just off the northeastern coast of Guam on Friday afternoon, the U.S. Geological Survey reports.

WHAT HAPPENED:

The quake hit at 4:37 PM Central Time on Friday, November 6, which was 8:37 AM Saturday morning local time in Guam. Its center was about 11 kilometers, or 7 miles, east-northeast of Yigo Village, on the northern end of the island. The quake started deep underground, about 113 kilometers, or 70 miles, below the surface.

IMPACTS:

Shaking was light. The Geological Survey received two reports from people who felt the quake, with shaking described as weak. Because the quake was so deep, shaking at the surface stayed limited. No damage has been reported, and the Geological Survey says there is no tsunami threat from this quake.

WHAT TO DO:

  • If you feel shaking, drop to the ground, take cover under a sturdy table or desk, and hold on until the shaking stops.

  • - Stay away from windows, heavy furniture, and anything that could fall.

  • - After the shaking stops, check your home for hazards like gas leaks, broken glass, and damaged wiring.

  • - Be ready for aftershocks. If another tremor hits, drop, cover, and hold on again.
