Breaking news alert for a seismic event in Mexico displayed on a digital news screen.

Tierra y Libertad, Mexico — A magnitude 4.6 earthquake struck early Tuesday morning in Mexico, the U.S. Geological Survey reports.

What happened:

The quake hit at 7:01 AM Central Time on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, about 5 kilometers east-northeast of Tierra y Libertad. It was centered deep underground, roughly 140 kilometers below the surface. Deep quakes like this one often feel weaker at the surface than shallow quakes of the same size.

Impacts:

The Geological Survey has no reports of shaking felt by residents so far, and no tsunami warning was issued for this quake. No damage reports have come in at this time. Because the quake was so deep, widespread surface damage is not expected, but people nearby should still check their surroundings.

What to do:

- Drop, cover, and hold on if shaking starts.

- Stay clear of windows, heavy furniture, and anything that could fall.

- Check your home for hazards such as gas leaks, broken glass, or cracked walls before turning anything back on.

- Be ready for aftershocks, which can follow in the hours and days after a quake.
